No matter how careful or clean you are stains and spillages happen to everyone. Whether a nice glass of red wine gets knocked over onto your lap or you dribble coffee down your front, there are a number of easy and quick cleaning solutions you should know. Here at SCS Cleaning Service we’ve compiled solutions to help you remove common stains.
Wine
Perhaps the worst and most dramatic stain, wine can easily ruin clothes if it is not removed and cleaned appropriately. Dab or blot the stain to soak up any excess liquid, avoiding rubbing the stain which can cause it to spread. A sprinkle of salt over the stain will soak up any excess liquid and stop it seeping further into the clothing. White wine can help to neutralise the stain before applying a paste mixture of baking soda and water. The item can then be washed as normal on a cool wash.
Blood
There are a number of ways to remove blood stains and all the methods use things you are already likely to have in your home. White vinegar is a great cleaning solution and can be poured onto the blood stain, soaked and then blotted to remove the stain. Another miracle ingredient is ammonia which can be used to dab at the stain at a half-strength solution mix with water. Baking soda, talcum powder and salt are alternative methods which, when bound with water, pick up the stain quickly.
Makeup
Cosmetics stains can easily happen and are usually relatively simple to remove from clothing. The area should be pretreated with prewash stain remover or liquid laundry detergent. It is then usually safe to wash the item normally at the recommended water temperature for the fabric and garment.
Ink pens
Placing a pen into your pocket only for it to leak ink all over your clean shirt is a nightmare. To get out ink stains you need to mix equal parts lemon juice and gentle laundry detergent together. Apply this solution to the stain and let it sit for a few hours. The clothing can then be washed in cold water.
Oil or grease
Particularly if you spend a lot of time in the kitchen it is useful to know how to get oil or grease stains out from clothing. Hairspray can be sprayed over the stain to instantly remove a lot of the grease before the item is washed. Shampoo is another handy method which is rather logical as it is designed to cleanse grease and natural oil from your hair. Rub the shampoo into the stain like a pretreatment then wash as directed on the clothing label.
Coffee
To get rid of that nasty brown stain the item of clothing should be soaked immediately in lukewarm water. Gently dab the stain with detergent or with water-diluted vinegar. It can then be washing in very hot water (the temperature is dependent on the fabric though). Repeat this process to weaken the stain if it remains. Avoid using bar or powder soap because this can set the stain permanently.
