You probably rely on your vacuum more than you think, without it the carpets in your home would quickly fill with dirt. By giving your vacuum routine maintenance from time to time it will help to preserve the life of the cleaner and ensure it performs with greater efficiency as well. - Empty the bag regularly: Depending on the type of cleaner that you own it will either have a bag inside that collects the dirt or a plastic cylinder that houses grime. Check this on a routine basis. If the bag starts to get full replace it straight away, if the plastic dust cylinder is filling up, empty the contents in the bug. Vacs are less efficient when bags and cylinders become clogged and they might fail to pick up dirt if the system is clogged.
- Check the filters in the vac: Some models of vacuum cleaner come with filters that can be removed for easy cleaning. Leave the filters as they are and they can become choked with dirt which means your vac loses its suction power. Read the manual that comes with the vacuum and it should tell you how to remove the filters. Most of them can be washed under warm water and once they are dry you simply pop them back in the vac and it’s good to go once more.
- Clean the roller: The roller on a vacuum is renowned for trapping hair and after a while this can have an impact on the performance. Look underneath the vac at the condition of the roller, if it can’t move due to hair being wrapped around it’s time to free things up. If your vac has a cover plate over the top of the roller remove it to gain access to the roller. Then you can cut the hair away with a small pair of scissors before removing the roller to give it a proper clean.
- Monitor the belt condition: If you own a vacuum that is driven by a belt periodically check for wear and tear. Signs of shredding on the belt need to be addressed because you don’t want to be in a position where the belt breaks. So replace the belt if you have to following the manufacturer’s instructions and don’t be left high and dry with a defunct vac!
